"Northern Tuscany " – Europe's Northern most vineyard

Colourful vineyards along the "Saale-Unstrut" wine road, proud castles ad palaces as well as medieval churches and closures along the "Romantic Road", the natural river landscapes of Saale and Unstrut, unique archaeological finds along the "sky paths" and churches that are centuries old – the Halle- Saale-Unstrut region offers an idyllic landscape from times believed long past.

The 60 kilometres wine road "Saale-Unstrut" takes you along historic sties from Memleben with its medieval monastery to the traditional spa Bad Sulza.

Explore Freyburg, the town of vintners and sparkling wine producers, watched over by the Neuenburg, the Wartburg's sister castle, for nearly 1,000 years now, during your hike, canoe or bicycle tour. Enjoy the typical wine and sparking wine in a comfy atmosphere in the vaults of the Rotkäppchen sparking wine production or the monastery Pforta in Bad Kösen.

Let the buildings along the "Romantic Road" whisk you way to the Middle Ages. Cistercian monastery Schulpforta with its famous students Nietzsche, Fichte and Klopstock, the Naumburg cathedral and 1,300 years old Curnfurde castle in Querfurt are just some examples for the many impressive buildings.

With the 3,600 years old "Nebra Sky Disc", the oldest known illustration of the cosmos in the world, one of the most important archaeological finds of the last decades comes from the Halle-Saale-Unstrut region. Visit the excavation site and be fascinated by the exciting story of its discovery with grave robbers and fences –the experience centre Arche Nebra in Wangen opens in June 2007.

In the North of the region, Halle beckons with its enchanting old town and unique cultural monuments. It had its 1,200th anniversary in 2006. Every year, the Händel festival reminds of the city's great son, composer Georg Friedrich Händel.

Be enchanted by his music or learn about his life and work in the Händelhaus, where he was born.

Take a walk through "Reichardts' garden", one of the 40 parks of the "garden dreams", where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was inspired as well.

Even after the Landesgartenschau 2004 in Zeitz, the Rossner-Park and the little town with the Moritzburg castle, subterranean vaults and hallways and the Hermannschacht, the oldest briquette factory in the world, are work a trip. Merseburg entices with a unique ensemble comprising of the castle facility from the late renaissance, the castle park and the 1,000 year old cathedral with its early-Romanic hall crypt and the world-famous Ladegast-organ. The "blue belt" Saxony-Anhalt with the Saale and Unstrut in the state's south is perfect for water sports enthusiasts. Paddle your canoe along vineyards, castles and palaces or take a guided dinghy tour to see the area.
